What is Lean?
Lean is a business methodology which offers a new way of thinking about how to organise human activities, so that they deliver:
- more benefits to society, and
- value to individuals, while
- eliminating waste.
A lean organisation is one which:
- sustains growth by aligning customer satisfaction with employee satisfaction, and
- offers innovative products or services profitably, while
- minimising unnecessary cost over-runs to customers, suppliers and the environment.
The basic insight of lean thinking is that - if you train every person to identify wasted time and effort in their own job and to better work together to improve processes by eliminating such waste - the resulting enterprise will deliver more value at less expense while developing every employee's confidence, competence and ability to work with others.
What is Six Sigma?
Six Sigma is a set of techniques and tools for process improvement.
Six Sigma strategies seek to improve the quality of the output of a process by identifying and removing the causes of defects and minimising variability in manufacturing and business processes.
It uses a set of quality management methods, and creates a special infrastructure of people within the organisation who are experts in these methods
Each Six Sigma project carried out within an organisation follows a defined sequence of steps and has specific value targets, such as:
- reduce process cycle time;
- reduce pollution;
- reduce costs;
- increase customer satisfaction; and
- increase profits.
What is Lean Six Sigma?
Lean Six Sigma is a method which relies on a collaborative team effort to improve performance by systematically removing waste and reducing variation . It combines lean manufacturing and enterprise with Six Sigma, to eliminate the eight kinds of waste:
- Defects;
- Over-Production;
- Waiting;
- Non-Utilised Talent;
- Transportation;
- Inventory;
- Motion; and
- Extra-Processing.
Lean six sigma not only reduces process defects and waste, but also provides a framework for overall organisational culture change.
